The Macomb Township (Michigan) Board of Trustees unanimously approved the sale of
eight acres of land to Suburban Sports Group of Farmington Hills, MI. The 7-0 vote was
handed down in a meeting on March 11, 2004. SSG will use the land to build a two-sheet
ice facility near Macomb’s township hall and recreation center on the southwest corner of
25 Mile Road and Broughton, and will adhere to strict construction requirements set for
the Macomb Town Center area.
SSG has a combined 30 years of experience specializing in recreational ice arena
consulting & management, programming, and sports & event marketing/communications.
Other Detroit-area arenas under SSG management include Suburban Training Center in
Farmington Hills, Novi Ice Arena and the Onyx – Rochester Ice Arena. SSG will begin
operations of Suburban Ice of Macomb by August 2005, with groundbreaking for
construction scheduled for September 2005.
Working with SSG on the Suburban Ice of Macomb project will be architect Rossetti
Associates of Southfield, MI and builder Frank Rewold & Son of Rochester, MI. Rossetti
has a wealth of arena-related design experience, having worked on such projects as
the Onyx, Ford Field Stadium in Detroit, Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, the Corel
Centre in Ottawa and the Palace of Auburn Hills. Rewold’s arena building experience
includes the Onyx, Suburban Training Center and the Palace of Auburn Hills.
SSG President Tom Anastos proposed the facility, which could be expanded into three
sheets of ice in the future, due to the township’s rapid growth and high numbers of
hockey and figure skating participation.
“We are very excited about this project and feel that it will be a nice fit for Macomb
Township and the Macomb Town Center development. The Township’s administration has
been very supportive of the project and is excited about the long-term benefits this
facility will bring to the community.”
